Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment

Learn to think, Think to Learn

What is Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment?

At Green Pastures, we believe that everyone has the ability to enhance their learning aptitude and improve their intelligence. We employ the Feuerstein Method, a cognitive intervention programme that remediates and/or enhances the cognitive functions responsible for learning difficulties directly. This is done through the use of repetitive cognitive exercises and mediated learning interactions to help individuals develop insights and good habits of thinking and problem solving.

FIE was developed by Professor Reuven Feuerstein, an Israeli Psychologist and has been successfully used all over the world as a tool for the enhancement of learning potential and cognitive functioning of children and adults. It has gain  world wide reputation for its success with a range of learning disabilities and special educational needs as well as gifted population especially those with twice exceptionalities. In recent years, Feuerstein Institute has developed the Thinking Memory programme for adults with head injuries and elderly with dementia. His work has challenged the belief that intelligence is fixed and cannot be changed.

How does FIE work?

The process starts with a pre-intervention consultation with parents / teachers followed by dynamic assessment with the learner to identify cognitive difficulties that are encountered in the following phases:

  • Input Phase: How information is gathered

  • Elaboration phase: How information is processed and organised

  • Output Phase: How information is communicated

FIE is carried out using specifically designed content-free tasks, or "instruments," that is intrinsically motivating to address specific cognitive functions at the input, processing  and output phase of the learning process.  Instruments are used selectively depending on the specific cognitive functions that are targeted. The last 10-15 mins of each session focuses on bridging to student’s academic areas and life skills that they may be struggling in.  The therapist known as a mediator would then draw out the insights, rules, strategies and principles from the learner through a process called Mediation of  Transcendence.

The following instruments may be used

According to Feuerstein, cognition and emotions are two sides of the same coin. It is thus just as important to develop the awareness. skills and insights into how to decode the underlying social and emotional experiences of self and others.

3 of the FIE-basic instruments are directed towards developing social/affective cognition leading to social competence:

  • Identifying Emotions

  • From Empathy to Action

  • Think & Learn to Prevent Violence
